1 Dead After 4-Vehicle Crash On Lake Shore Drive

(CBS) -- A driver was fatally injured Monday evening when her vehicle crossed the median of Lake Shore Drive and struck three oncoming vehicles, Chicago Police said.

Seven others were injured in the wreck, which occurred around 6 p.m. in the 4800 block of Lake Shore Drive, at Lawrence Avenue, on the edge of Uptown.

The unidentified woman whose vehicle caused the crash was travelling southbound when the Chevy crossed into the northbound lanes, police said. The driver was transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Six other people were transported to hospitals in various conditions, the Chicago Fire Department said; another motorist treated at the scene declined to be taken to the hospital.

Speed appears to have been a factor in the accident, police said. The driver who was killed had been attempting to change lanes, police said.

Traffic was shut down in both directions for hours.
