The Score’s Jay Zawaski has reported that Stanley Cup winning goalie Antti Niemi will play for the San Jose Sharks next year. According to Zawaski, Niemi signed a one-year $2 million deal.
Niemi isn’t the only free agent goalie to sign with San Jose this off-season. The Sharks signed Antero Niittymaki to a two-year $4 million dollar deal earlier in free agency.
Niemi left the Blackhawks as a free agent after taking contract negotiations with the Blackhawks to a arbitrator. The Blackhawks submitted an offer of $1.5 million and the arbitrator awarded Niemi $2.75 million. The Hawks then released Niemi and he became an unrestricted free agent.
News of Niemi’s signing comes a day after the Blackhawks held a press conference to officially introduce Marty Turco as a Blackhawk.
