The Score’s Jay Zawaski has reported that Stanley Cup winning goalie Antti Niemi will play for the San Jose Sharks next year. According to Zawaski, Niemi signed a one-year $2 million deal.

Niemi isn’t the only free agent goalie to sign with San Jose this off-season. The Sharks signed Antero Niittymaki to a two-year $4 million dollar deal earlier in free agency.

Niemi left the Blackhawks as a free agent after taking contract negotiations with the Blackhawks to a arbitrator. The Blackhawks submitted an offer of $1.5 million and the arbitrator awarded Niemi $2.75 million. The Hawks then released Niemi and he became an unrestricted free agent.

News of Niemi’s signing comes a day after the Blackhawks held a press conference to officially introduce Marty Turco as a Blackhawk.

If Niemi was willing to “settle” for just $2 mil, why didn’t Bill Zito “settle” with the Hawks? Bill Zito overplayed his hand at the expense of his client, Anti Niemi. When the next contract comes up, Anti should have more input, and leave less to his agent.
