Earl-y Warning

As enticing as the Sox/Sox series is, the opener tonight in Boston will likely be affected by Hurricane Earl.  The storm-track is targeting New England for heavy rains this evening, so stay tuned to the Score for the latest on possible delays and/or schedule changes.

Gerald Laird's Twin-toppling homer last night added 3% to the playoff chances (16% now, up from 13%  -- from BP's PECOTA-infused monte carlo).  The pitching rotation is lined up with Danks/Floyd/Buehrle, and we hope weather-related calls can be made that avoid wasting a start like Edwin Jackson's 7-pitch outing in KC.

Manny Ramirez's personal barber is said to be in Boston, too, ready to shear the slugger's dreads today to something that balances team specifications with wig sales.  Matt Thornton is expected to be activated from the DL this afternoon, and Brent Morel (love his mushrooms with a simple brown-butter sauce) arrives to help at 3B.

Bears exhibitionism is over for 2010.  Jerry Angelo continues to be the only source of honest opinion at Halas Hall, and he told reporters before last night's game that "We're trying to figure out who we are -- what we can do and what we can't do offensively and defensively.  Are we going to have to help protect the passer?  We may, but we need to figure those things out.  We need to see that."

Not much to see after he spoke, however, as material players were largely uninvolved.  If the new offense already needs pass-pro help as Angelo suggests, then the quick-strike capability is compromised.  Not good.

Could the TD catch by Greg Olsen cause some team to part with, say, a fourth-round pick instead of the currently-offered (and rejected) fifth?

Steve Stone joins us to talk baseball at 2:00 today.  The Bud Light "Who Needs Two?" Tavern Tour continues in downtown Naperville as we return to The Lantern.  Start your weekend with us, some cold Bud Light and the chance to win tickets.
