Updated: October 8, 2010 12:36 PM

CHICAGO (CBS) - A residential block in the trendy Wicker Park neighborhood turned into a crime scene overnight, when a man was shot in the leg in an armed robbery.

Two men approached a group of four people about 2:10 a.m. in the 1200 block of North Paulina Street, robbed them of their belongings then ran off, police said.

The victims, men between 21 and 23 from Indiana, were walking down the street when two men approached from behind and demanded their money, according to a Shakespeare District police lieutenant.

They ordered one of the victims to remove his earrings and hand them over, and told another man to give them his watch. They also took two Droid cell phones, an iPhone and cash from the victims, who are from Hammond and Gary, according to the lieutenant.

At some point during the attack, one of the suspects fired three shots into the air and then fired at the victims, shooting one in the leg, according to the lieutenant. One of the victims was also pistol-whipped.

Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said the man shot was taken to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center.

The man who was pistol-whipped did not require hospitalization, Shakespeare District Captain Marc Buslik said.

One suspect is described as black, 20 to 25, 6 feet 1 inch to 6 feet 2 inches tall and 160 to 175 pounds. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark blue jeans. The other assailant was also in his 20s, 5 feet 10 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a dark complexion. That suspect was wearing a black skull cap and black gym shoes.

No arrests had been made as of midday Friday.
