A Summit man riding a motorcycle died after colliding with a sport-utility vehicle Thursday evening in the Southwest Side’s Clearing community.

The wreck occurred at 5:54 p.m. at 61st Street and Harlem Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Michael Sullivan.

A man driving a Suzuki Katana motorcycle was southbound on Harlem when it crashed into a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer that was southbound on Harlem, making a legal left turn onto 61st Street, according to Sullivan.

The man driving the motorcycle was taken to a hospital but later died, the officer said.

James Schoen, 49, of the 7400 block of West 62nd Place, Summit, was pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood at 6:21 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Driving conditions were clear and dry, according to Sullivan, who said no citations were issued and no one else was injured.

An autopsy is scheduled for later Friday.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
