Police Open Fire On Man In Altgeld Gardens

Police opened fire at a man in the Altgeld Gardens public housing development overnight, after he allegedly pointed a gun they say he was ready to use.

The incident happened in the 13000 block of South Evans Avenue in the Far South Side complex, just after 9 p.m. Sunday.

Officers say they were on patrol when they saw a man holding his waistband. They say as he approached, he drew his weapon and pointed at them.

The act prompted officers to open fire, Gaines said. The man was not hit, and he dropped to the ground before being taken into custody.
The man remained in custody as of early Monday, Gaines said. No charges were filed as of that time.

Calumet Area detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, are investigating. An IPRA spokesman was not immediately available for comment.
