Woman Killed In Lake Shore Drive Crash

CHICAGO (CBS) - A motorcycle crash claimed the life of a woman on Lake Shore Drive overnight, and shut down the southbound lanes for hours.

The crash happened around 11:52 p.m. Sunday in the southbound lanes of the Drive just south of Irving Park Road, police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.

The motorcyclist -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as 34-year-old Lacie Berry -- was ejected from her bike.

Police said Berry was riding south when the bike struck the rear of another vehicle as both attempted to change lanes. Police said Berry was thrown from the bike and struck the pavement and the medical examiner's office said Berry, of the 1100 block of East 83rd Street, was dead on the scene.

Town Hall District police said the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the crash. A source indicated Berry was wearing a helmet.

Berry was a mother of three, and was active in the PTA at her children's school.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured and has not been issued any moving violations, police said. However, three compliance violations were issued.

Lake Shore Drive was back open by the 5 a.m. hour.

The police Major Accidents Investigation Unit is investigating.
