Brookfield Zoo, Village Work On Water Deal

BROOKFIELD, Ill. (CBS) - The water fight involving the Village of Brookfield and its namesake zoo could soon be over – and it might have been a big misunderstanding.

The village said it offered the Brookfield Zoo a deal for 5 percent more than its cost, just last August.

The previous deal for water at the zoo dated back 20 years, and was given a one-year extension after it expired in 2009.

Officials say when the zoo never responded to the August offer, they increased the rate to the same amount small businesses and residents say.

At a Brookfield Village Board meeting Monday, zoo officials said they were being "victimized" by the village, and the rate increase would cost an additional $700,000 a year.

The question now is whether the August deal is still on the table. The village says it's possible, but it needs to run the numbers again.

Meanwhile, the zoo is also asking the Brookfield-North Riverside Water Commission to sell them water directly, the Tribune reported.

The Brookfield Zoo is operated by the Cook County Board, through the Forest Preserve District.
