PORTER COUNTY, Ind. (STMW) – Witnesses told police a bicyclist weaved directly in front of the semi that struck him Thursday night.

Douglas Ewing, 31, of Portage, Ind. was pronounced dead at the scene, in the 900 block of north Indiana 149.

The crash happened at 6:39 p.m. and Ewing was wearing dark clothing and had no reflectors on his bike, police said. Sunset was at 6 p.m.

Both Ewing and the Freightliner tractor-trailer, driven by Brandon Griffith, 50, of Hobart, Ind. were southbound at the time of the crash.

Griffith tested negative for alcohol. Toxicology results for Ewing are pending.

The Porter County Sheriff’s Department and Coroner’s Office continued to investigate.

Terrible memory for the trucker. RIP Ewing.

maybe they’ll learn to use sidewalks or bike trails instead of endangering themselves and motorists

so much money is invested in to keeping the bike paths nice and they prefer to ride on the street to endanger their life and to get drivers in trouble.
    why???? makes no sence.
    please nothing against but think.

RC: Bike paths are for recreational bikers. Bikers that use bikes as transportation need to use roads.

I cannot feel sorry for a person who does not value his life enough to take even the most basic precautions.

Doug did value his life… More than most…. This was a horrible tragedy for both of our families that we all have to live with everyday for the rest of our lives… The bike he was on was brand new & did have reflectors…. He was just trying to get home…. I feel for Mr. Griffith & hope that maybe he will see this & know that we are very sorry that he has been put into this terrible position & hope that in time he will be able to find peace wth this horrible tragedy…. Doug was & is an amazing person that touched many peoples lives…. Mr. Hamilton this was a horrible ACCIDENT that we all must try to pick the pieces up from…. I cannot feel sorry for someone like you… Compationless….

It’s too bad that so many incompetent automobile drivers can’t remove themselves from the gene pool this easily.
