NORTH AURORA, Ill. (STMW) – Charges are pending against the driver of a van that struck and killed a Cicero woman and injured a man as the two stood on a North Aurora street early Monday.

The vehicle’s driver, later identified as a 30-year-old Aurora man, initially fled the scene but turned himself in to police about three hours later.

A bystander found Doreen L. Cardenas, 22, of the 2400 block of South Lombard Avenue in Cicero and Pedro A. Navarro, of the first block of Grant Steet in North Aurora lying in the street at 42 S. Grant at 2:02 a.m.

Police said an investigation showed the pair were standing outside of Cardenas’ parked car on the west side of Grant when the van, heading south, swiped the car and struck the two.

Both were taken to Provena-Mercy Center in Aurora where Cardenas was pronounced dead at 2:35 a.m. Navarro remains in the hospital in an unknown condition.

The van’s driver, Lee Roy Patters, 30, of the 1000 block of Assell in Aurora turned himself in to Aurora police at 5:01 a.m. He was taken into custody by North Aurora police. No charges have been filed.

North Aurora police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the incident to call traffic investigator Dan Cyko at 6300-897-8705.

The North Aurora Police Department was assisted in this investigation by the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team.

The blurry ambulance photo had nothing to do with this story. They could have just as easily put up a photo of a penguin.

Really??? 1 dead and 1 in hospital and this is what you two have to say. Sickening!!!!!

As a friend of the family of the woman who died, I find your comment appalling and clearly an uninformed judgment since it is based only on a brief online news article.

So sorry for the family. A tragic accident, I hope the guy was not drunk…
