Off-Duty Cop, Armed Robber Exchange Gunfire

CHICAGO (STMW) - An off-duty police officer exchanged gunfire with an armed robber Monday afternoon on the Southwest Side. Nobody was wounded.

Two people approached an off-duty police officer about 4 p.m. in the 2700 block of West 62nd Street and one displayed a gun and demanded cash, police said.

The off-duty officer said he was a police officer and one of the robbers fired a shot, prompting the officer to return fire, police said.

The robbers fled on foot and are not in custody Monday night, police said.

The officer was not injured and there is no indication the robbers were wounded, police said.

The Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, responded to the scene, according to spokesman Curtis Tarver.

Wentworth Area detectives and the IPRA are investigating.
