A report came out over the weekend that the Arizona Diamondbacks were going to make Paul Konerko an “off-season priority.” However, Nick Piecoro, of The Arizona Republic, put the report to rest.

Konerko is a local product and an alum of Scottsdale Chaparral High. That local connection, according to Piecoro, seems to be driving most of the rumored interest. What Piecoro is hearing from his team sources is that a deal “probably won’t happen,” which should be good news for White Sox fans.

Piecoro feels that Konerko’s big year priced him out of the Diamondbacks payroll. Even if Konerko would be inclined to take a “home town” discount for the Diamondbacks, he will more than likely still be too expensive for them. And if he is willing to take a pay cut to play in Arizona, common sense would lead to to believe he would do the same to stay in Chicago.
