Pistol Thrower Pleads Not Guilty

CHICAGO (STMW) - A Far South Side man who allegedly threw a gun at a police officer after running out of bullets in early October pleaded not guilty to the charges against him on Tuesday.

Sierre Haney, 19, of the 10000 block of South Rhodes Avenue, is charged with unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated assault to a peace officer, criminal damage to government property, possession of cannabis, resisting a police officer and having a firearm without a valid FOID, authorities said.

On Tuesday, Haney pleaded not guilty to the charges and a status hearing was set for Dec. 13, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said.

Police said Haney was also wanted on an outstanding warrant when he was arrested after the Oct. 5 incident.

Patrol officers heard several shots and saw Haney running east in an alley near East 107th Street and South Eberhart Avenue, police said.

As they approached, Haney allegedly turned towards officers while holding a handgun. He threw the gun at an officer's head, but it missed, striking and damaging the windshield of a patrol car, police said.

He apparently threw the gun because it was out of bullets, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said. Haney was apprehended after a short foot chase, and three small plastic bags of cannabis were found on him, according to a police release.
