U Of C Receives $5M For Hospital Building

Long-Awaited New Hospital Pavilion To Open In 2013

CHICAGO (CBS) - The University of Chicago Medical Center has received a $5 million grant from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation.

The funds will be directed toward the New Hospital Pavilion being built on the hospital campus, located just to the west of the U of C's main campus.

Plans for the $700 million new pavilion were approved by the U of C Board of Trustees two years ago. A news release at the time called it "a 21st-century technological and architectural tour de force, designed to accelerate medical progress and to leverage the close collaboration between the University's world-class clinicians and researchers for the benefit of patients."

The project will cover more than 1 million square feet along 57th Street, from Cottage Grove Avenue over Maryland Avenue and all the way to Drexel Avenue. Every floor will have more than 100,000 square feet of space.

Among the amenities at the center will be 240 private inpatient and intensive care beds, 24 state-of-the-art operating rooms, 12 rooms for gastrointestinal and pulmonary operations, seven rooms for interventional radiology, and the latest in MRI and CT scanners. The center will also be connected to the Comer Children's Hospital, which opened five years ago, and the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine outpatient facility.

Architect Rafael Viñoly designed the new facility. He is also the architect behind the U of C's much-heralded Charles M. Harper Center, which opened six years ago as a new campus for the Graduate School of Business.

The New Hospital Pavilion will house a range of medical education, research and disease treatment programs.

McCormick Foundation president David Hiller said the center is sure to be considered among the world's great research hospitals. He said that fits with the foundation's tradition of supporting important and innovative work in Chicago.

The hospital plans to name the center's main entrance the McCormick Foundation Lobby in return. The new pavilion is set to open in 2013.
