CHICAGO (WBBM) — If you are planning to deep-fry that turkey for your Thanksgiving menu, here’s something to consider: Illinois has the second-highest number cooking fires on the holiday.

The National Fire Protection Association says fires from turkey fryers cause 15 million dollars in property damage each year.

State Farm spokeswoman Missy Lundberg says a review of insurance claims found Illinois had 22 fryer fires between 2005 and last year.

Only Texas had more.

To avoid your bird going up in smoke, make sure not to use too much oil, defrost the bird and don’t leave it unattended.

If your fryer does catch fire, Lundberg reminds you that water and ice cubes will only make things worse. Instead, use a fire extinguisher.
