Beauty Products Put To The Test

Trying to look younger? You may have a cabinet or counter filled with creams and serums that aren't getting the job done.

With such an enormous selection of anti-aging products on the market, how do you know what works? As CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez reports, the folks at the Good Housekeeping Institute put some of the big names in beauty to the test.

How good are your options in a bottle or tube? The Good Housekeeping Institute enlisted some 800 women to test 90 anti-aging products.

"We took 5,000 before-and-after photos on our lab equipment to see how a woman's skin looked before and then after," institute director Miriam Arond says.

Using special instruments, researchers carefully documented changes in hydration levels, wrinkles, and sunspots.

"There are a lot of products out there that do make a difference," Arond says.

A department store brand took best facial moisturizer. At $150, the Chanel Ultra Correction Lift Lifting Firming Day Cream was a bit pricey, but testers say it's worth the splurge.

"Because not only is it very hydrating, but it actually did lessen the number of sun spots on your skin," Arond says.

But if you're on a budget, Olay's Definity Deep Penetrating Foaming UV Moisturizer SPF 15 got an honorable mention, and it's only $28.

The best night cream was L'Oreal Paris Advanced RevitaLift Deep-Set Wrinkle Repair Night Cream. It's just $20, and very hydrating.

Olay Pro-X Eye Restoration Complex, at $42, won in the eye cream category.

Chosen as best body lotion was Fresh Sugar Acai Age-Delay Body Cream. It will set you back $65 at Sephora. But for just $7.77 at the drugstore, Olay Body Quench Plus Age Defying Body Lotion gets an honorable mention.

The best age spot fader -- Roc Multi Correxion Tone Perfecting Treatment -- is a bargain at $13.80.

Should we believe this research? Dr. Roberta Lucas says she'd like to see specific results from the testing. But she thinks it gives women a little extra knowledge the next time they go shopping.

"It does help us to narrow down what creams we might also have good experience with," she says.

Here are the results of the Good Housekeeping tests.
