Arlington Heights Marine Killed In Afghanistan

CHICAGO (CBS/WBBM) -- As Chicago pauses to mark Veterans Day, there is news of another local Marine killed in action while fighting in Afghanistan.

The Marine Corps reports that small arms fire cut down Lance Corporal James Stack as he conducted combat operations in Helmand Province, a Taliban stronghold in southwestern Afghanistan.

Stack was a 20-year-old rifleman, and enlisted in the Marines 19 months ago. The Marine Corps says that this was his first combat deployment, but he already had been awarded the Purple Heart.

He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
