Crews Hit Gas Main In West Rogers Park

CHICAGO (STMW) - Construction crews hit a gas main on a West Rogers Park neighborhood street Thursday morning, prompting a hazardous materials response and the temporary evacuation of several nearby buildings.

A Level 1 HazMat was called for the gas leak at 2020 W. Morse Ave. about 10 a.m. but was quickly elevated to a Level II HazMat, Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor said.

A gas main was ruptured by a construction crew and residents of nearby buildings were being evacuated as a precaution, MacGregor said. The gas main, contained underground, had been shut down and there were no reports of injuries.

The HazMat was secured about 11 a.m. and all residents were allowed back into the buildings, unconfirmed fire dispatch reports indicated.
