After being shot, the man attempted to run to the Austin District police station at 5701 W. Madison St. but collapsed about 100 feet away, Zala said.

The police station is a about a block from the shooting.

He was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest, Zala said.

The gunmen, who were wearing all black, fled on foot and are not in custody Saturday evening, police said.

that’s crazy that the wud take him to mount sinai when they passed up west suburban and loretto hospitals!!!

Loretto and West Suburban are not trauma centers. Sinai, Stroger, Christ and Northwestern are the only trauma centers in the Chicagoland area. The reason why there are not many trauma centers on the westside is because most patients tend to use Public Aid as their insurance which only reimburses hospital pennies on the dollar. It cost hospital $xxx, xxx a day to operate a trauma center because of the equipment and specialized staffing that needs to be available 24/7. If the facilty only brings in $xx,xxx a day, then they do no make enough to offset their costs and a decision is made to close their trauma center.

I know this is a bit much, but I want tp make sure everyone undrstands the real reason why trauma centers are not in certain communities.
