Woman Arrested For Driving With Husband On Hood

PORTAGE, Ind. (CBS) -- A woman was arrested in Portage, Ind., on Thursday after driving down the street in her minivan while her husband was hanging off the hood.

Police said that LaTasha McDowell, 31, said she and her husband had been arguing because he did not want her driving after drinking and he would not get out of her way, so she drove off with him holding onto the front of the minivan.

As she was driving on Willowcreek Road, her husband Darrayl M. McDowell, was holding on to the engine compartment, police said. The van's hood was up when officers stopped the van at 5:50 p.m. on Thursday.

LaTasha McDowell told police she would have entered the toll road ramp with him inside the hood. She told police she had three Miller Lite beers but would not tell police when she consumed the beer.

McDowell refused to take standard field sobriety and portable breath tests. She again refused testing at the Portage police station and police received word she had a previous drunken driving conviction in Cook County, Ill., on Sept. 26.

LaTasha McDowell was handcuffed and taken to Porter hospital and Porter Superior Court Judge Julia Jent signed a search warrant to obtain her blood and urine samples.

She was charged with Class D felony drunken driving and misdemeanor criminal recklessness.
