Rain-Snow Mix Coming Tonight

CHICAGO (CBS) - As recently as Friday of last week, you could have been fooled into thinking it was still September.

Temperatures were climbing to the 70-degree mark, and wearing a jacket was likely to leave you sweating.

But alas, it is November. The Millennium Park ice rink is opening for the season later Wednesday, and Thanksgiving Day is next week.

So while we've been spoiled so far this late fall with the clear skies and occasional rain, that's all changing for the Wednesday evening forecast. The infamous "S" word has been uttered.

CBS 2's Megan Glaros says a rain-snow mix is expected Wednesday night into Thursday morning, as temperatures are likely to drop below the freezing mark while clouds sweep over the area and bring precipitation.

While most areas only saw rain – if any precipitation at all – early Wednesday morning, some areas were already seeing a rain snow mix as of around 6 a.m. The rain-snow mix was reported south and southeast of the Chicago area in Kankakee counties, and southern Lake and Porter counties and Jasper and Newton counties in Indiana.

And while the immediate Chicago area hasn't seen any snow so far, some outlying counties have. Lake effect snow hit parts of Northwest Indiana last month, bringing up to an inch of accumulation in some areas.
