Dog Attack Leads To Prison For Owner

A teenager has been sentenced to five years in prison for ordering his pitbull terrier to attack a 75-year-old man.

DECATUR, Ill. (AP) – A central Illinois teenager has been sentenced to five years in prison for ordering his pitbull terrier to attack a 75-year-old man.

Matthew Brandt of Blue Mound was sentenced Tuesday in Decatur after pleading guilty last month to aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony. Blue Mound is about 10 miles southwest of Decatur.

Arthur B. Gilson of Blue Mound testified he was attacked by the dog as he walked down a street in the small town on Aug. 1. A neighbor yelled at the dog and it stopped the attack as the 17-year-old Brandt looked on from his porch. Wilson’s left hand required stitches.

A member of Brandt’s family told police the dog wouldn’t have attacked if Brandt had not ordered it to. The dog was euthanized.

    Ban Pit Bulls!!

    • Rick is a moron

why? Because the dog was loyal enough to listen to it’s owner? How does the dog know what its doing is wrong? All the dog is doing is what it was told to do. It attacked the man because in the dogs eyes the old man was a danger to its owner. The owner is to blame not the dog. The owner told the dog to attack and being loyal and protective it did. The dogs’ owner should be punished not the dog. And to ban all pitbulls? have you ever been around one? They are the sweetest dogs with the best personalities when treated right. Don’t place a general statement on an isolated incident.

I am not really a fan of pits but for some reason rescued a pit mix. The sweetest most gentle creature, never even growls at me unlike my beagle. It was the dumb teenager’s fault. That poor dog. :-(

I agree that they are very sweet dogs and have taken a bad rap from many people. The owner SHOULD serve jail time, but I have mixed feelings about killing the dog. Usually when a dog tastes human blood, it is almost impossible to stop it from attacking again, so I would leave that decision to the experts because most dogs can be saved. Case in point, almost ALL of Michael Vicks’ dogs were saved and given to good families where they are doing very well, but they didn’t attack people.

Ban stupid dog owners!! It’s not the dog’s fault, it’s the owner’s.

im the proud owner of a pitbull and for all my 58 yrs its the best dog that i have ever owned. shes very affectionate, loyal and loves people. its so sad but this dog had a very irresponsable owner, he was only doing waht he was taught. this dog should of had a second chance with a caring owner. he should not have had to be put down. sad, so, sad

  • Teresa

These are great dogs that unfortunately attract some real jerks for owners. There was no need to put down the dog. Put the owner away and save the dog. All of Michael Vick’s dogs were salvageable.

What an idiot dog owner!!! He got everything he deserves….what a hillbilly… WAS NOT THE DOGS FAULT… was the stupid uneducated teenagers

  • RJ

How sad that the dog is punished(killed) because of the stupidity of it’s owner. I agree with those who said the dog was being obedient and only doing what it’s master ordered. I believe that Pit Bull’s are no more agressive than many other breeds and the responsibilty for those that attack must be on the owner rather than the dog.

This is why I as a law abiding well armed Hoosier would never ever ever leave home without one or two guns. A few weeks ago I was very glad to be armed because a pit bull charged at me on the sidewalk I was forced to stop the attack with a 9mm bullet. Living 10 minutes from Chicago I feel sorry for you all because you have no right to self defense once you leave home. All dogs bite and if your nice friendly dog threatens me it will suffer for your negligence in letting it molest innocent passers by.

  • Roberta Waker

Darrell. Ever think a dog attacks because it is provoked? Very few, if any, dogs will attack anyone or anything for NO reason. You kind of sound like you are looking for a dog to attack so you can shoot him or her. Hope you don’t live near me with that attitude as there are a lot of nice dogs here. Hope you never miss the dog and hit a child; then you will never own a gun again and will rot in prison. Pepper spray works on dogs or grab their hind leg to make them helpless, or don’t you care about anything other than killing?

    • Darrell

Dear Roberta I care about self defense and not being injured or killed by someone’s (dog owner’s) negligence.Pepper spray will not work on a determined attacker dog or otherwise. Sometime it takes many bullets to stop them. I would not be trying to grab a dog’s legs as it is silly as dogs don’t attack hind legs first also I know armed self defense very well and know that I may have to hold fire depending on what’s behind the attacker. Illinoisans really need to get over the notion that guns and self defense are bad unless it’s the police. Lastly I would not be shooting to kill but only to stop the attack. When I shot the pit bull I ceased fire when it retreated as that was my only objective. However sadly it died. If I’m minding my own business and a dog attacks I would not be concerned with the reason only my safety..
