The incident happened just after 6 p.m. Monday, in the 2100 block of South Millard Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood.

The gunman approached a 26-year-old woman who lived in the block as she was walking to her car, police said. The man said "just hand it over" and put his hand on his waist band. As she gave him her purse, she spotted a black gun in the waist band.

At that time, a man from across the street tried to intervene, shouting "Hey, hey," police said. The gunman then turned around and opened fire, shooting him once in the abdomen.

The gunman is described to be a man between 25 and 30, 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8 and 165 to 175 pounds, according to Ogden District police. He was wearing a black pull-over and dark-colored pants.

The Good Samaritan, Bobby Butler, 55, of an unidentified home address, was pronounced dead at 7:55 p.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

The gunman with the woman's purse fled the scene, going east through an alley on Millard Avenue, police said.

The woman was not hurt and police declined to comment on what the gunman got away with.
