Authorities: Stay Out Of Handicapped Parking Zones

CHICAGO (WBBM) - If you're heading to a mall Friday, a word to the wise – don't park in a handicapped zone unless you're actually disabled.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Mike Krauser reports, Illinois Secretary of State police are set up at malls all over the state, and they're not hesitating to enforce the handicapped parking law.

"Primarily, we're here to send a message that these spots are open for those who truly need them, and we ask the public to cooperate and don't park there unless they need to," said Secretary of State's office disability liaison Bill Bogdan.

The police are not only after those without handicapped placards, but also those who shouldn't have them.

"My favorite one is, 'The placard came with the vehicle,'" Bogdan said.

And the penalty is no slap on the wrist. A first offense warrants a $500 fine and a 30-day driver's license suspension.
