Runners In Speedos Raise Money For Diabetes

CHICAGO (WBBM) – The snow certainly didn’t damper the spirts of more than a hundred people who ran at least a mile with barely anything on.

At a popular bar on Division street, the place was filled with that holiday red that we’re all so familiar with.

“I am wearing a speedo,” Tom Letter said.

Letter was wearing only a red speedo, and a Santa’s hat of course. He joined more than one hundred others who ran on Rush street to Michigan Avenue, half naked, in the cold and snow on behalf of the Chicago Diabetes Project. The point is to raise awareness and money for cause that some believe does not get enough attention.

“The whole point is to have fun and get people involved. We just want people involved. That’s all we want,” Nicole Stapleton said.

Stapleton, a diabetic herself, said the second annual event is expected to raise more than $5,000.

I think I would be inclined to donate if the girls were running in skimpy bathing suits. How about this idea, have a contest for people to donate money for team bikini and team speedo and the team that raises the most money (all for the charity) has to do the run. I’m thinking I would give money just to make sure the speedo guys keep their shorts on.

I hope he doesn’t get sweaty and itchy.

The beautiful blonde in the photo above is Annie Hemmesch – one of the organizers and a diabetic herself. My mom, Jan Edmonds, and I organized a raffle this year that was a great success! To get involved next year, find us on facebook (Santa Speedo Run) or visit my website at to contact me and learn more – we could use your support! And thanks to everyone that attended this year – it was fabulous!
