Busiest Day For Post Offices

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- This is the busiest day of the year for post offices all across the country.

WBBM's Newsradio 780's Bernie Tafoya was out talking to people who were mailing last minute cards and packages, of whom there were many at the post office in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood, at 3349 W. 111th St.

One such person was Mary Brock, who showed up with a number of envelopes in her hand.

"I'm taking care of cards, sending them to family members out of town; so hopefully they'll get them by Thursday or Christmas Eve," Brock said. She conceded that she was guilty of "a lot of procrastination."

Colleen Valenti was just finishing up her last-minute mailings.

"These are my last few. I already mailed everything else out; the stragglers here," Valenti said. "I do not have to wait in line; I already got all my overseas ones down on Saturday."

And Rich Seaquist wasn't mailing for himself.

"My moms is going to be a hundred, so she says, 'You better mail them today.' I had to write them all out for her.

Tuesday is the last day to send something by priority mail to get it there by Christmas, and Wednesday is the last day to ship by express mail.

The U.S. Postal Service figures to handle about 800 million pieces of mail in the day.
