Mixup Leaves Gary Family Without Power

GARY, Ind. (WBBM) -- A Gary, Ind., family is facing a Christmas with no heat or electricity after a mix-up over utility service.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Dave Berner reports, Christina and Antonio Gomez put up a Christmas tree as soon as they moved into their new home. Their two small children, a 4-year-old and a 5-month-old, were excited.

But on Thursday, a NIPSCO power company worker came in and pulled out the utility meter.

It seems the Gomez family ran into a situation where the electric and gas at their home had been shut off in October, but there had been unauthorized use since then, and a signed, notarized lease was required to keep the service on.

The shutoff was apparently scheduled before the family moved in, and Christina Gomez was calling to establish service at the same time the meter was being pulled.

Now the family is hoping it can get all required documents completed before Christmas morning.
