Blue Line Service Restored After Subway Fire

CHICAGO (STMW) - Normal service on the CTA's Blue Line has been restored Sunday afternoon after a fire started in a subway tunnel in the Logan Square neighborhood.
About 8:20 a.m. a fire at the tracks caused smoke in the subway near the Northwest Side Logan Square station, according to CTA spokeswoman Wanda Taylor. That station is located at 2620 N. Milwaukee Ave., according to CTA's website.
Taylor said firefighters put out the fire and no injuries were reported.
As of 1:55 p.m., the power has been restored and trains are operating normally again, according to Taylor.
The small fire that erupted had something to do with the electrified third rail, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight.
At 9:40 a.m. the still and box alarm for the fire and an EMS Plan I, which sent five ambulances to the scene, were canceled, according to Knight, who confirmed no one was hurt. The alarm and ambulance plan were initially called at 8:27 a.m.
Taylor said passengers on two trains had to be unloaded, but only one train was in the tunnel at the time.
Those customers were able to exit by getting off at the platform and using the station. No one had to be walked through the tunnel, she said.
The fire department believes garbage caught on fire.
