State Warns Of Spa Dangers
Growing Reports Of Infections, Injuries
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Massages, facials and other spa treatments are popular Christmas gifts, or common when getting ready for holiday parties.
But state officials are reminding the public to be extra careful, after a growing number of reports of infections or injuries.
Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation director Donald Seasock said his agency recently conducted compliance tests at 11 day and med spas throughout Illinois. The tests found that many spas didn't meet standards.
Some treatments, such as Botox injections or a chemical peels, are medical procedures that require oversight by a healthcare professional.
Illinois law allows doctors to delegate the actual treatment, but not without some type of supervision.
Seasock says consumers should be sure to research any facility before booking a day at the spa.
