By MICHAEL WALTERS
Cantankerous Critic’s Top 10 of 2010
#10 “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World”
A visually inventive, candy colored, pop culture sugar rush that’s quite simply the best movie about video games ever made.
Forget the Little Fockers. Ben Stiller reminds us he can be funny, and act too as a bitterly funny and acidic but aimless New Yorker looking for direction in L.A.
#8 “Toy Story 3”
Pixar does it again with a poignant tale about what happens to beloved toys when their owners finally outgrow them. Simple, Sweet, and Heartwrenching.
#7 “The Ghost Writer”
Director Roman Polanski creates a perfectly executed Hitchcockian thriller full of political intrigue that gives Ewan McGregor his best role in years
#6 “Winter’s Bone”
Dynamite performances in this tale of a teenage girl looking for her dad in the Ozarks make this simmering stew of a mystery one that’ll grow on you.
#5 “The Fighter”
Mark Wahlberg is still a bit of a punch drunk palooka, but it’s Christian Bale and the supporting cast who score a knockout in this unconventional boxing movie.
A magnificent mind bender full of originality and dazzling visual imagery that’s unlike anything you’ve seen before.
A beautifully crafted existential souffle from writer director Sofia Coppola about a Hollywood action star stuck going in circles.
#2 “Black Swan”
Natalie Portman’s bone cracking ballet thriller is a brilliant descent into a dark world of madness from the demented mind of Director Darren Aronofsky.
#1 “Social Network”
A fully realized vision that takes what could have been a wonky origin tale and elevates it to high art with unconventional storytelling and a fine attention to detail.
