CHICAGO (STMW) - A suspect is in custody for allegedly stabbing and killing a man with a kitchen knife late Friday during a New Year's get-together on the South Side.

A 47-year-old man was stabbed about 11:30 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Halsted Street, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

The man suffered stab wounds to the abdomen and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, Alfaro said.

The stabbing happened when an argument turned violent during some sort of New Year's celebration and the suspect allegedly stabbed the man with a kitchen knife, police said.

The man later died during surgery at Christ Hospital, police said. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office could not immediately confirm the death.

The suspect is in custody early Saturday and charges are pending, police said.

Wentworth Area detectives are investigating.
