Man Charged With Stealing Minivan, Leading Police On Chase

CHICAGO (STMW) - A man is facing a variety of charges after allegedly stealing a minivan early New Year's Eve in the Southwest Side Little Village neighborhood, leading police on a pursuit that ended with his arrest on the South Side.

Mark Harbin, 21, of the 5800 block of South Peoria Street, is charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and aggravated fleeing police -- both felonies -- as well as misdemeanor resisting a police officer, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

The chase started about 4:40 a.m. Friday after the owner of a 1999 Dodge Caravan called police to report someone stole his car near Cermak Road and Homan Avenue, police said.

State Police pursued the suspect in the vehicle down the Dan Ryan Expressway while Chicago Police monitored the chase over the radio, Mirabelli said. Chicago police officers cornered the vehicle after it left the expressway and curbed it in the 6500 block of South Yale Avenue.

After jumping out of the vehicle, Harbin allegedly fled on foot and tried to hide but was arrested by responding officers, Mirabelli said.

State Police also issued him several traffic citations, including driving more than 40 miles per hour over the speed limit, not wearing a seat belt, improper lane usage, failure to signal, not driving on the right side of the road and disregarding a traffic control light, police said.

The owner of the vehicle was not reported injured in the incident, Mirabelli said.

Bond information was not immediately available, but Harbin is next due in court Jan. 7 at West Felony Court (Br. 44).
