Campbell: ‘We Just Feel More Comfortable In Our Roles’

After a slow start, the Chicago Blackhawks are finally starting to show signs that they’re still the same team that won the Stanley Cup last season. And it has everything to do with comfort.

“I find we’re jelling together right now,” Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell said on the Danny Mac Show. “I think we just feel more comfortable in our roles. I think we’re getting to that point in the in the season where we know how much each game means and how we need to climb in the standings.”

In their last 10 games, the Blackhawks are 6-4-0, but in they’ve won their last three games while outscoring their opponents by a combined 12-2.

And there might not be a better time than now to find their comfort level. Five of their next seven games are against playoff teams, including a games against Detroit, Philadelphia Vancouver and a back-to-back games against Nashville on Saturday and Sunday.

“You know, it’s a grind these 82 games,” Campbell said. “I think, at the start, coming off last season it was a grind to get it going and now I think everybody feels fresh, we’re healthy.”

Watching the Blackhawks jell, it’s clear that the more they do the more they start having fun.

“Hockey is a ton of fun,” Campbell said. “We love coming to the rink everyday. So right now everybody is in good spirits and ready to go with a big weekend coming up.”

I’ve said this from day one, it’s gonna take time. How much time would be determined when these guys actually adapted to Coach Q’s system, players on their lines and all the little things expected of each player – TRUST being at the top of the list. I mean, this was almost a 50% turtnover, and that’s hard to deal with. I have faith in them. One thing I do Know we’ll get EVERY night, and that’s EFFORT.

  • MadSam

Paul, I agree 100%, we are not suffering from a LACK OF EFFORT!! Our players are pushing themselves, but as you pointed out, and I’ll add, you lose so many players, insert new ones, everyone is at a loss because no one is familiar with the others let alone a Coach’s ‘system’! Add to this a mix of injuries, and one can see why our record is what it is!! Things are looking better, BUT, I want to point out that the Blackhawks have played 5 MORE GAMES THAN DETROIT! 5 more than most NHL teams in fact, so we need wins, YESTERDAY, with things being so close in their division, the Hawks need to go on a nice long WIN STREAK, while DETROIT SUFFERS a losing streak miraculously. Hell, not only Detroit, every team in the darn division! The Hawks are going to squeak into the play-offs, IF THEY MAKE IT, due to the 5 game head start, which they lossed I believe…mathematically the Hawks can’t afford anymore disappointments!!

  • Paul H.

Right MadSam. We’ve already had our share in the injury bugaboo. We can’t afford to have that happen much more. Look at the Wings. Now it’s their turn. 2 goalies, Datsyuk, Cleary, Holmstrom and a few more key players. EVERY team will face this problem. Vancouver hasn’t yet. If they do, they’ll either discover how deep they are or how much trouble they’re in. I don’t wish that on the teams in front of us – but, we’ve had ours, I expect the’ll have theirs. By the way, smart moves by Bowman, bringing up one of the kids here and there. That way, if any of them are REALLY needed, they won’t be stage stuck.
