Northern Illinois Topples Toledo

(WSCR) - Once Northern Illinois took the lead, they stayed ahead. Toledo was hoping to break their losing streak taking on the Huskies, but Northern Illinois extended it to five.

Xavier Silas scored 20 points and Tim Toler added 14 to lead Northern Illinois to a 64-54 victory over Toledo on Saturday.

After missing his initial shot attempt, Silas made three straight 3-pointers in the first 3:12, giving the Huskies (6-9, 2-1 Mid-American) a lead they would never relinquish.

Malcolm Griffin had 31 points, the only double-digit scoring figure for the Rockets (3-14, 0-3).

His trio of early 3s extended Silas' streak to nine, as he was 6 for 6 from behind the arc against Eastern Michigan on Tuesday. Northern Illinois made six of its first nine 3-point tries and was 11 of 29 for the game.

After Toledo closed to within four points with 9:39 remaining, a Tony Nixon 3-pointer and three-point play by Lee Fisher helped the Huskies restore a safe cushion.
