Former Security Guard Arrested For Trafficking Weapons

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Chicago Police said they nabbed a South Side gun trafficker who illegally sold a dozen guns, including one weapon to a man who was then murdered.

Dwan Ryals, 32, of the 8200 block of South Jeffery, is charged with gunrunning. On Wednesday, he was ordered held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

On Dec. 1, narcotics officers arrested Ryals after recovering narcotics and five handguns in a search of his home, police said. He was charged with drug possession and armed violence, and released on $50,000 bond.

The state also revoked his firearm owner's identification card, which is required to buy guns.

Meanwhile, officers on the Chicago Anti-Gun Enforcement team investigated Ryals' gun purchases and learned he had bought at least 14 of them from legal outlets — including eight within a one-year period, police said.

But police said they could not establish where Ryals bought the five guns found in his home.

Of the 14 guns he purchased, Ryals allegedly told officers he illegally sold 12 of them. He is accused of selling one of the weapons to a convicted felon, Linton Goldsmith, who was killed when he was hit by assault-weapon fire while sitting in a van on Aug. 24 in the 8000 block of South Jeffery, police said.

When he was killed, Goldsmith didn't have the weapon Ryals had sold him, police said.

Records show Ryals once held a state license to work as a security guard.
