Group Calls For End To Frivolous Litigation

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CBS) -- The State of Wisconsin is being held up as an example in the field of litigation fairness.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Dave Dahl reports, Travis Akin, executive director of Illinois Lawsuit Abuse Watch, says Wisconsin is reforming its court system to improve on a poll that ranks it 22nd in the nation in legal fairness.

Illinois ranks 45th in the poll, which was conducted by the Harris research firm.

Akin says frivolity is not confined to lawsuits.

"Over a period of three years, at one Department of Corrections facility in Chester, Ill., had $10 million in workers compensation claims," Akin said. "What is it about Illinois that continues to create an environment of sue first, ask questions later."

Many staffers at the prison complained of carpal tunnel syndrome, Akin said, "from opening and closing gates with keys."
