Lyons Man Dies While Shoveling Snow

LYONS, Ill. (CBS/AP) — A 58-year-old man died Wednesday after collapsing while shoveling snow in front of his home in west suburban Lyons.

Police were called to the man’s home around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday when he collapsed. Because the road was impassable at the time, he was taken to an ambulance by a police armored vehicle.

The man was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead.

His name has not yet been released.

This is so sad. I was afraid this was going to start happening. There is way too much snow and it’s overwhelming to try and remove it all. It doesn’t help that the ambulances can’t get to a lot of homes.

Poor guy, I feel bad for his famiily. The bottom line, do a little at a time. The snow is not going anywhere, too many people feel like they have to attack the snow. I saw people shoveling last night and then reshoveling all the snow that blew in where they had previously cleared. It aint worth dying over, let it lie.

It is horrible. Like 67, 78-79. i started shoveling at 9:00am and finished by 3:00 pm non-stop. I too was thinking about my ticker. Poor guy.

  • Cathie

My sympathies to this man’s family and friends.

This is awful. If cities don’t already do this, they should offer help to people who are at risk for heart attacks. It happens every time. In the case of my grandfather, he continues to shovel despite people close to him telling him not to. I fear deeply for him, and I think that people should be a lot more careful in these situation so tragedy doesnt strike.

Hi Ethan, if your grandfather needs help, here’s an idea YOU go and help him. what is w people nowadays and always turning to the govt to help them. its up to US to help our family and friends. I hope you’re on your way their now.

    Well Said Jim

Jim and Bob: while I agree with you, Jim, that family and friends should help each other. I don’t agree with you, Bob. What Jim said was not actually that “well said”. The “US” ironically looks like U.S. (United States or govt) rather than us (as in friends and family). And Jim also used the wrong “there”. If Ethan were going to his grandfather’s house–he would be on his way “there,” not “their”. I don’t think it was a typo. And Jim, maybe Ethan’s grandfather lives in Montana or New York and Ethan can’t go “there” everytime it snows. Jim, maybe you should take it easy on Ethan. He just felt bad for the guy who died shoveling snow.
