Metra Train Hits Pedestrian In The North Suburbs

HIGHWOOD, Ill. (STMW) - A Metra train fatally struck a pedestrian Tuesday evening in north suburban Highwood.

Union Pacific North Line train No. 343 from Chicago to Kenosha, Wis., struck a pedestrian about 6:15 p.m. just north of the Highwood station, Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said. The train does not stop at the station.

Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller said the pedestrian, a man in his 20s, was dead on the scene. His identity was not being released as of Tuesday night.

There were no reports of injuries on the train, Metra said.

The train was stopped just north of Washington Avenue in Highwood while officials investigate, Gillis said. The train was scheduled to arrive in Kenosha at 6:40 p.m., according to Metra's website.

Because of the incident, train Nos. 345, 349, 351, 353 and 355 were also delayed, Metra said. At 8 p.m., all trains were moving but were 30 to 130 minutes behind schedule.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, Keller said.
