Schuster: Carlos Marmol Signs Three-Year Deal

By David Schuster--

Dinner will be on Carlos Marmol tonight. In fact he should be paying for the remainder of the spring after signing a 3 year deal in excess of $20 million. The deal was pretty much worked out over the last week or so but wasn't announced until Monday the day before a scheduled arbitration hearing.

Other news and  notes from Monday. Carlos Zambrano said he will stay out of trouble this season. Of course you can rewind that to the same thing he says every spring out here in Mesa. The only problem is that he never keeps his word and does something crazy during the regular season so stay tuned for that. Zambrano also said he wants to be the starting pitcher on Opening day something neither Matt Garza or Ryan Dempster are striving for. If Mike Quade is smart he'll give the nod to Zambrano just to keep him happy (for a while).

Kerry Wood said last years success that he had with the Yankees has re-energized his career.  His E.R.A. was over 6 before he came to New York but was lights out in the 2nd half of last season and is hoping for a carry over effect for the coming season. Wood also refused to answer the question about who broke Sammy Sosa's boom box which is a running joke between reporters and himself.

John Grabow says he is 100% healthy after knee issues wiped out most of last season. Grabow says he will wear a brace on his knee but didn't think it would hinder him at all.

Andrew Cashner says he really wants that 4 th or 5th spot in the starting rotation. The tall right hander says he has added a change up and slider to go along with his 100 mph fastball. Randy Wells also put in a stake for the starting rotation and said last year's travails are now behind him.
