Moreland Will Join Cubs’ Broadcast Booth

On Wednesday, the Chicago Cubs and WGN announced that former Cub Keith Moreland would replace the late Ron Santo during the Cubs’ radio broadcasts. Moreland and the Cubs agreed to a three-year contract.

Moreland played 12 seasons in the major leagues, six of them for the Cubs. For his career he had a .279 batting average, 121 home runs, 674 RBI and a .746 OPS. His best season came in 1985 when he hit for a .307 average with 14 HR, 106 RBI and 12 stolen bases.

“I’m very excited to work with a great broadcaster in Pat Hughes, a great team in the Cubs that I was lucky enough to play for and a great radio station that has the power to reach millions of Cubs fans,” said Moreland. “I’m not a replacement for Ron Santo – he’s impossible to replace. All I can do is be me and strive to connect and build a relationship with Cubs fans everywhere.”

For the past few seasons Moreland has been the color analyst for the Texas Longhorns baseball and football teams. A graduate of Texas, Moreland played for the university’s baseball and football teams.

He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 7th round in 1975, and would spend four seasons playing in Philadelphia. Over the course of his career he spent time playing for the Phillies, Cubs, San Diego Padres, Detroit Tiger and the Baltimore Orioles.

On December 3, 2010 Santo died after a life long battle with diabetes. Santo’s playing career with the Cubs lasted from 1960 to 1973. He played one more season in 1974 with the White Sox. He joined the Cubs’ broadcast booth in 1990.

During his career, Santo played for the National League in the All-Star game nine times. He batted .277 during his career with a total of 342 home runs, and 1,331 RBI.

    As a Sox fan I really don’t give a $hit.
Honestly I did enjoy the Pat and Ron Show for the pure comedy.

Would like to know how long this Moreland deal is…

If I’m Moreland, I keep my resume up to date. That booth and chair is reserved for Wood for however long he wants it. I’ll be interested to hear Pat and Kerry together in a few years.

  • Rich Sherrie

Agree, Woods would be perfect fit. Think he may have come back just for that purpose. If not Wood, how about Mark Grace ??

its funny how all you sox fans know as much if not more about the cubs than us true cub fans.deep down sox fans are truly cub fans also

    • Spoon

I’m a Cubs fan that knows more about the Sox than most of the Sox fans I talk to, that’s not being a Sox fan, that’s being an educated sports fan in Chicago. Though given the average sports fan’s IQ in this city, it’s not a shock that you couldn’t tell the difference…

      • Larry Horse's Arse

Gee, Spoon, I didn’t know you were a Cubs fan.
Yes, I can verify that you know much more about the Sox (Bears and Boo too) than the typical Sox fan.

Your command of grammar and syntax has always made you the anti-meatball on these blogs.

Yuck! Boring choice. Dave Otto at least has more personality. I guess Pat Hughes was used to keeping Ronnie in check, now he will have to keep Moreland awake!

Indeed, Who does care: he is a most caring individual.

Who cares! Give me The Hawk and winning White Sox over those pitiful “flubs” and
the dumpy bar called wrigley with all the so called baseball fans. All the loosers that
attend a “minor league” team at the dump do nothing but drink and talk on cell phones!

    • Spoon

Protip: Using excessive quote to show that you’re being ‘smrt’ doesn’t accentuate your point, it makes it obvious that your attemps were terrible and that you needed to emphasize them for anyone to notice.

Clearly, Sox fans dont drink or talk on a cell phone… at US CELLULAR.. holy god are you dumb. Shocking that you like Hawk. Here’s an idea, go drink a car battery and make the world a better place.

Love it love it love it!!!!!!

  • Midnight Mike

I never talk on a cell phone at a ballgame, or a movie theater, whatever. There is no respect anymore in society for each other. Just text, and drive, text and walk, text and take a dump. Really??? Went to Auto Show on Saturday, and a guy was talking to his lady I guess on the toilet, told her to hold on, then flushed. IDIOT! Anyone hits my car while texting, won’t be driving for awhile, and maybe they might be able to text their heart out while recuperating!

Congrats To Keith and Good Luck !! I have been a Hundley Camper with Keith the past serveral years and know he will do an outstanding job and honor ” the seat” in the booth next to Pat.

Wew for a second I though it was that crackhead Ted Williams. There’s a reason why a guy with a pitch perfect stereo voice ends up panhandling from motorists. He gets fished out of the streets and he’s in rehab inside of one week.

  • Ted V.

I’m sure Keith Moreland will do a much better job than Ron Santo. In fact, Marcel Marceau or the “talkative” Harold Baines would have done better than Ron Santo. I just hope the Cubs and WGN didn’t give Keith Moreland the” Ron Santo Suckfest Script” that they gave to Garry Meiers and Greg Jarrett and all new employees of WGN.
