Child Dead After Striking Head In Indiana Home

GRIFFITH, Ind. (STMW) — Police expect to file charges Thursday afternoon after a 20-month-old boy died after hitting his head in a northwest Indiana home.

The child was pronounced dead at 12:10 a.m. Thursday at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Griffith Police Chief Ron Kottka said the toddler, Derek Hanson, was injured Tuesday night and had been hospitalized ever since.

Police responded at 11:24 p.m. Tuesday to the 1000 block of East 35th Avenue in Griffith, Kottka said.

Sources said the boyfriend of the child’s mother had been swinging the baby by its heels when the child’s head hit a television set.

The Indiana Department of Child Services is working in partnership with law enforcement in the case, spokeswoman Ann Houseworth said.

Another male child in the home was taken into protective custody following the death, Houseworth said. The department has not had previous contact with the family.

I am sickened. Swinging a child by the heels who then hits a tv set? Children are people, not playthings. I am so very sorry for the loss of this child.

Sad and tragic. May the Angels carry you through the gates of Heaven. You have left a cold and cruel world. RIP

I’ve been to Giffith, Ind. Having been there several times this incident does not surprise me. Not a lot of “thinkers” in that town! The local bars are full of fights and the people who are fighting get let back in night after night just to fight again. Ricky’s lounge used to be Riley’s Roadhouse. Steer clear of here. I’m sure the child swinging genius drank here!

Illinois has nothing on Wisconsin.A very beautiful state. While Illinois has it’s gems,Starved Rock, etc, it just doesn’t compare. There are very few illegal immigrants there as well.Another major plus.

When is the mother going to be charged? She knew this man was doing drugs. She did the drugs with him the day the baby got hurt. She left the kids with this monster. Why didn’t she call the Father and ask for help. The poor father didn’t even know about the boyfriend. He was still trying to work out his Marriage and wanted her to start counseling. She was doing drugs and letting this man be mean to the babies. This is why her friend moved out. She told the mother he is being mean to the kids. The mother wanted the drugs. Now this baby is gone. SHE NEEDS TO BE CHARGED ALSO!!!! WHEN IS SHE GOING TO BE CHARGED?????
