Renewed Call For High-Speed Rail In Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM) -- People who want to kick-start high speed rail in Illinois are at it again.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Dave Dahl reports, the sooner the fast trains get on the tracks, the sooner Illinois will be more competitive, says Rick Harnish with the Midwest High-Speed Rail Association.

"Today in the rest of the world, our economic competitors are enjoying very fast travel, very cheap travel, and much more productive travel because their government saw the need to invest in very fast trains," he said. "Today in China they are currently operating over 4,000 miles of trains operating at 150 mph or above," Harnish said.

Harnish appeared at a state House news conference with state Sen. Martin Sandoval (D-Cicero), pointing out that the State of Florida just turned down $2 billion in bullet train money that Illinois ought to be able to use.
