Student Charged After Selling Pot Brownies At New Trier

WINNETKA, Ill. (STMW) - Police arrested a north suburban high school student on Monday for allegedly selling marijuana-laced brownies at the school.

Winnetka police Sgt. Marc Hornstein said the 16-year-old New Trier High School student will face three charges in juvenile court, including alleged possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and selling marijuana on school grounds.

The first two charges are Class A misdemeanors, Hornstein reported, and delivery is a Class 3 felony. New Trier has also has taken firm disciplinary action against the boy, District 203 Supt. Dr. Linda Yonke advised parents in a letter sent home Tuesday.

Neither police nor New Trier officials would release the name of the student. And Nicole Dizon, New Trier's director of communications, would not elaborate on the severity of discipline.

She reported the district is conducting its own investigation while assisting police in the criminal probe.

Hornstein said police believe the student had already sold some of the brownies at school prior to the arrest, but he would not say if additional charges will be sought against students who bought them.

"The school staff and our liaison officer (at the high school) are continuing to follow-up on this case to determine if there are any other areas of concern associated with this person," said Hornstein, who did not disclose the quantity of drugs found on the student.

Because of the ongoing investigations, Dizon would not say whether additional students were involved or were found to have purchased the drug-laced brownies.

"Please be aware that drugs may be concealed in baked goods; ingesting marijuana or other drugs in this manner can have serious consequences," Yonke wrote to parents.

Earlier this month, a 17-year-old male student at Evanston Township High School was charged with possession of marijuana after five students became ill on Feb. 1 after eating brownies that contained a large amount of marijuana.

The student was charged with a misdemeanor.
