Don't Miss This

A year ago, after the 2009 season, when Lovie Smith addressed the media and the fans after a 7-9 season there was an almost unanimous call for Smith to fired. But the head coach, as always, remained confident that everything could be turned around.

The source of his confidence was also the source of the team’s NFC Championship run in 2010.

“Our system,” Smith said.

In an exclusive interview with Zach Zaidman Lovie talked about how the 2009 season didn’t shake his, or the team’s confidence that they could rebound in 2010.

“You can make a case for why things happen,” Smith said. “When you go through your evaluations…we were close [in 2009], we played the Packers close, even though they beat us both times. You look at the San Francisco game, the Atlanta game, there were games that could have gone the other way…To me, you panic when you’re 2-14, when I say panic I mean there’s a lot of concern when you’re 2-14. But 7-9 can change quickly, which we said then. So again, I think it’s proven that our system works with what we’re doing. And we’re going to stay the course.”

And the Bears have echoed Smith’s mindset to stay the course by extending his contract through the 2013 season.

  • La Trice Bivens Devoe

A lot of Bears fans are so racist. Just because he’s black he shouldn’t get an extension? Any of them white coachs like bilichik and shannahahan never get scrutinized like the fans do to Lovie. Yet they get long contract extensions and no one complain. I hope more black coaches get hird, they deserve this. Maybe then people will understand our struggles.

    • Jerry Fink

umm… that’s because those coaches win Superbowls, not their skin color.

      • La Trice Bivens Devoe

Being he is black, his job is on the line more than other coaches. As a result he is more likely to go with what the ownership wants to do and what players they give him. He doesn’t win superbowls because the Bears ownership won’t spend money on top players like the patriots and cowboys do.

    • Michael Che

He doesn’t win superbowls because he can be quite satisfied with 7-9. Which is awful sad but has absolutely nothing to do with skin color.
No effort to win, that’s all.

  • BEAR DOWN!

That is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. He was getting blasted because of the stupid decisions he made throughout the year. Whether it was personnel or game-time decisions, he tends to make terrible decisions. It has nothing to do with his skin color and the fact that you bring it up leads me to believe that YOU are the racist.

    • Spoon

Your response is far more stupid, since you clearly missed the point of the analogy. Let me help you simple man. Calling Cutler ‘not tough’ is as stupid as calling Lovie a ‘racist’. You see, Lovie assumed people weren’t too stupid to miss the whole point. However, this city is full of some of the dumbest people ever, as your post clearly demonstrates.

Next time, try critical thinking. It might save you from looking like a complete dope in the future, but I doubt it.

      • Michael Che

I think BEARS DOWN! was answering La Trice, wasn’t he?
