Report: Bulls To Sign Butler Off Waivers

According to a report, the Los Angeles Clippers’ Rasual Butler will sign with the Chicago Bulls once he clears waivers.

The report, by CSN Chicago, cites Bulter’s agent, Andy Miller, who said via text, “We intend on signing with Chicago when he clears waivers.”

Butler, a 6’7” swingman from La Salle University, is averaging 5.0 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 41 games with the Clippers this season. He’s shooting 32.6% from three-point range and has averaged 18.1 minutes per game, including two starts.

Butler’s best season as a pro came in 2009-10 when he averaged 11.9 points per game with the Clippers.

Butler is in the final year of his contract that’s worth a reported $2.4 million, the Bulls are roughly $2.9 million under the salary cap.

Nice pick up , will give them some scoring and length .

If nothing Butler provides some bench depth at the 2 guard and small forward positions. He provides some scoring, some defense, some veteran leadership and some length.

As long as the Bulls have offered only the minimum and kept in tact as much of the 2.9M they have leftover, this is a good signing.

Butler can be a very useful player even though he did nothing on the Clippers… then again it was VDN and Clippers and here’s hoping that Butler has a resurgence of sorts with Thibs and the Bulls. Butler isn’t old man Linsay Hunter. If Butler really wants, I think he could give Bogans a run for his money for the starting job and it wouldn’t surprise me if he takes Bogan’s 15-20 min per game.

All in all, if Butler helps you win even ONE playoff game, then its worth it.

One more thing to keep in mind. In the playoffs, its all about matchups. To be able to match up with your opponent’s athleticism, size, length etc, especially defensively can go a long way in helping to win basketball games.

I could see in a matchup with the Celtics, Bogans being a better fit at the SG position running around with Ray Allen. In that matchup, quickness and speed is needed. I would throw Bogans at Jason Richardson of the Magic if we face them too. But if you face the Hawks or Heat, then you may go with Butler in order provide that length and muscle to matchup against Joe Johnson and Dwayne Wade.

the bulls don’t loose anything but money here, and they had money to boot. the way i see this, if over this stretch run if butler can give loul deng 3-5 extra minutes of rest per game, that should hep freshen loul up for playoff time. he can play those dogged minutes in the beginning and middle of the second and towards the end of the third, and reduce dengs min/game from 40 to 35, it’s worth it.
i don’t have bogans angst like everyone else does, but i worry about Luol because if you asked him to play 48 he would gladly do it and he will wear himself thin
