Rain, Lightning, Possible Snow Throughout Night

CHICAGO (STMW) - Rain, heavy at times, and occasional cloud-to-ground lightning will continue throughout the Chicago area Friday night, possibly turning briefly into snow in Saturday's early morning hours.

Northeast and North Central Illinois and Northwest Indiana are expected to see scattered thunderstorms and occasional cloud-to-ground lightning, along with moderate to heavy rainfall, according to a report from the National Weather Service.

Rain will likely continue until 2 a.m., and could then switch to snow between 2 and 3 a.m., the weather service said.

Colder air could lead to a period of freezing rain and sleet late tonight across far Northern Illinois, the weather service warned. Little or no snow accumulation is expected.
