Updated 03/10/11 - 10:23 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A West Side teenager has been charged with attempted murder following a shootout with Chicago police officers Tuesday night on the West Side.

Alante Hands, 17, has been charged with one count of attempted murder and two counts of attempted armed robbery.

Police said Hands fired shots at several officers around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 4100 block of West Maypole Avenue.

Officers were patrolling the "high crime" area when they saw the teenager, who was on foot and armed with a revolver.

"When they approached, the offender opened fire and they (the officers) returned fire,'' police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said.

Hands, of the 4700 block of West Maypole Avenue, allegedly got into a vehicle being driven by a second suspect and tried to escape. Police caught up with them and they were arrested, police said.

Gaines said no one was hurt during the incident.

The revolver was recovered and police have seized the vehicle, according to police.
