Body Found In Alley Near Downtown

UPDATED 03/11/11 11:51 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- It turns out that a man whose body was found in an alley just north of downtown was actually hit by a car.

Around 6 a.m. Thursday, police were notified of the death in the alley behind 17 E. Ohio St., a Belmont Area sergeant said.

Initially, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office indicated that the man had apparently plunged to his death from a building.

But an autopsy performed Friday determined the 60-year-old man actually died of multiple injuries when a motor vehicle hit him, according to a spokesman for the Medical Examiner's office.

The man's identity was not being released Friday morning pending notification of family.

He lived at the nearby Tokyo Hotel, 19 E. Ohio St., and was pronounced dead on the scene at 6:20 a.m. Thursday, according to the spokesman.

Pizzeria Uno, the old Tree Studios building, and the Bloomingdale's Home and Furniture store in the old Medinah Temple are all located nearby on the trendy block.
