Up To 6 Cars Crash On I-55

UPDATED 03/16/11 6:43 a.m.

SHOREWOOD, Ill. (CBS) -- As many as six vehicles were involved in an accident Wednesday on Interstate 55 near Joliet.

The accident happened on southbound I-55 before the U.S. 52/Jefferson Street exit.

Four to six vehicles were involved, and one car ended up sideways in a ditch, CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reported.

At least two semi-trailer trucks and several cars were involved in the crash.

Illinois State Police blocked the left lane and right shoulder after the crash.

By 6:40 a.m., the left lane had reopened, after crews cleared debris from a car that slammed into a truck. But one of the cars involved in the crash remained in the muddy ditch.

Traffic was backed up for about two miles to Black Road, Habermehl reported. He suggests taking U.S. 52 and working your way to I-80.

Information about injuries was not immediately available.
