4 Hospitalized After Crash Near Oak Street Beach Curve

UPDATED 3/20/11 9:27 p.m.

CHICAGO (STMW) - Four people were hospitalized in a Sunday afternoon crash on Lake Shore Drive. Another nearby crash about the same time contributed to the traffic mess in the Gold Coast neighborhood.

Emergency personnel responded at 2:13 p.m. to a pin-in crash at 900 N. Lake Shore Dr. and took four people to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado said.

Three people were in good condition and one person was in serious condition, Rosado said. Their ages and genders were not immediately available.

A short time later, a 2006 BMW traveling south on Lake Shore Drive attempted to make an illegal left turn and hit a 2008 Audi in the 800 block of North Lake Shore Drive, police News Affairs Officer Anne Dwyer said. After the collision, the BMW crashed into the median.

Two air bags deployed in each vehicle, police said. The driver of the BMW and three people in the Audi refused medical treatment.

The driver of the BMW was ticked for making an illegal left turn, police said.

Police temporarily closed lanes to traffic while they investigated.
