4 Hospitalized After Crash Near Oak Street Beach Curve

UPDATED 3/20/11 9:27 p.m.

CHICAGO (STMW) – Four people were hospitalized in a Sunday afternoon crash on Lake Shore Drive. Another nearby crash about the same time contributed to the traffic mess in the Gold Coast neighborhood.

Emergency personnel responded at 2:13 p.m. to a pin-in crash at 900 N. Lake Shore Dr. and took four people to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado said.

Three people were in good condition and one person was in serious condition, Rosado said. Their ages and genders were not immediately available.

A short time later, a 2006 BMW traveling south on Lake Shore Drive attempted to make an illegal left turn and hit a 2008 Audi in the 800 block of North Lake Shore Drive, police News Affairs Officer Anne Dwyer said. After the collision, the BMW crashed into the median.

Two air bags deployed in each vehicle, police said. The driver of the BMW and three people in the Audi refused medical treatment.

The driver of the BMW was ticked for making an illegal left turn, police said.

Police temporarily closed lanes to traffic while they investigated.

this is & has always been called the s curve. get people familiar with chicago to write these stories.any chicagoian will know exactly where if you say s curve.

    • Joe

Not true, read the other comments and look at the link in my first one

  • rich

Not right mary. The “S curve” doesn’t exist any more. “S curve” was the short stretch of LSD which made a 90 degree turn going east -west along the south side of the Chicago River (and the site of countless accidents before it was replaced).

  • Joe

Rich is absolutely correct. Here is link to a picture of the ridiculous thing

    LSD S-Curve

  • Joe

It was straightened in 1986, so only us Mature drivers should remember it.

Mary: Nice job calling people out for being uninformed–when you turn out to be the uninformed one. “Any Chicagoan” instantly knows you’re wrong.

It would be nice if they had more on the story of the car that flipped there today. We were there when it happened. My husband had to cut driver out of her seat belt while i attended to her mom in the back seat who was badly injured. I wonder how they are or if anyone has more info after we left??

  • Bob Hamilton

The car in the picture does not appear to be badly damaged.

    • Nat

That was the other car from the minor fender bender that happened 20 mins later, not the one that was on its roof. They are reporting about two different accidents in one article. Looks like they somewhat corrected the story.
